library values

The Spectrum Center’s Library intends to uphold the values put forth by the ALA’s Core Values of Librarianship and Library Bill of Rights. As such, our values are inspired by and adapted from these standards. To view the Core Values, please click here. To view the Bill of Rights, click here.

access

We will ensure access to inclusive and affirming resources for all LBTQIA+ identifying folks in the Pine Belt region of Mississippi. We will prioritize materials that reflect diverse identities and experiences, with an emphasis on intersectionality. We will create a welcoming space that is free of barriers for underserved populations.

equity, Inclusion, and diversity

We will actively cultivate a diverse collection by uplifting voices of BIPOC, persons with disabilities, and other multiply-marginalized Queer folks. We will make intentional choices about whose narratives are centered when selecting new materials.

intellectual freedom

We will defend the right to read, explore, and express diverse identities without censorship. We will ensure that historically marginalized voices are not only available and accessible, but celebrated. We will resist book bans and challenges related to Queer materials, to the end of putting an emphasis on seeking donations of these titles.

privacy

We recognize the importance of privacy in a library, and that of patrons using a Queer library is critical. We will take extreme care to privatize patron information related to usage of the Library and will keep this information entirely separate from circulation records so that patron identities cannot be linked to materials.

public good

The Spectrum Center’s Library, as a program and resource of The Spectrum Center, has the same goals in mind. We intend to prioritize the collective well-being of our community and offer a safe and affirming space for Queer connections to be strengthened.

sustainability and preservation

The majority of our materials are acquired through donations of second-hand items, with many being from independent publishers who are no longer printing. Making these items accessible and visible is vital to our role as a library. As such, we will do our best to preserve the integrity of our rare materials. Please click here to view our policies, including the policy regarding the circulation of rare and unique items.
